2014 Visit to Victorian Parliament
Our annual visit to Victoria Parliament commenced with a photo opportunity with the Premier, followed by a tour of Parliament house. Enjoyment of the architecture in the historic building was quickly interrupted when we entered the chamber for Formal Parliamentary Business at 9.30am.
Sitting in the lower chamber gallery behind Geoff Shaw we witnessed the Premier putting a motion to remove the Member for Frankston after his formal apology to Parliament the day before (02/09). With live feed and most media outlets following the development we were instant celebrities (for 5 mins).
We followed this invigorating start to the day with a briefing from James Newbury, Senior Advisor to the Premier. A very informative and informal session. James openly shared both State and Federal experience with the participants.
Participants enjoyed a networking lunch with Western Victorian MP’s. Joined by the Hon Hugh Delahunty, Member for Lowan, representing the National’s in the Assembly. Our aspiring leader took the opportunity to speak with Hugh and discovered his amazing ability to know us all by name and occupation. A true leadership quality from a true gentleman.
Mr David O’Brien and Mr Simon Ramsay, members for Western Victoria, also made themselves available for discussion on tabled reports and life in the political arena. Both showed genuine interest in the LGSC program and our group networked with style and professionalism.
Participants also experience question time in the Legislative Council and Legislative Assembly demystifying the working of our State Political System.
We would like to sincerely thank our speakers and guests for being so generous with their time, knowledge and advice.
Inaugural Joint Program Day State Library Melbourne
LGSC joined the Fairley, Geelong and Ballarat program participants at the inaugural joint program day held at the State Library Melbourne on 2 September.
The theme of the day was “Community Leaders – influencing the future of regional Victoria”, with the aim broken down to have participants consider strategically the bigger picture, recognise the diversity that our regional communities have, explore how we as regional leads can influence and advocate and most importantly continue our ongoing networking opportunities.
Deputy Premier of Victoria, Peter Ryan officially welcomed the participants inspiring us with the quote “You can only stand around the edge for so long till you take you hat off and throw it in the ring”. A poignant statement that triggered the group’s enthusiasm and optimism for the day ahead.
Colin Radford, Deloitte, presented the morning session on “Building the lucky country” leaving the group with the equation of Global Opportunity + Australian Advantage = Economic Prosperity. Colin discussed the resources that Australia has available and how these can put our country on the global market.
Mid-morning Jacinta Allan congratulated all participants and provoked us to consider the “the misconception of regional communities”.
Jason Clarke, Minds @ Work, was next to inspire the room full of stirring leaders. Jason explored the system of “Step Out, Step Up and Step Back”, and how we, as future leaders, can work to our full potential and how we can assist others to become the best they can be. Stepping back presented us with an image of how we can create the bridge between “We are here” and “We want to be there” using the IDEA analogy.
After a networking lunch breakout groups were formed with guests including John Faine, ABC Radio, discussing “Leadership, whose responsibility is it anyway?” Regrouping the speakers for a Q & A style panel for the final session including Father Bob Maguire, Justine Flynn, Thank you Group, Minto Felix, Oaktree Foundation, Natalee Wood, The Weekly Times and Jason Mifsud, AFL.
The day was officially closed by Lachlan Bruce, Chief Executive, Regional Development Victoria.
Leadership Great South Coast would like to thank all guest speakers that took time out of their busy schedules to support us, our fellow leadership Program participants and MC Corrinne Armour for providing us with the opportunity step out of our comfort zone and network with our fellow regional Victorians.
